Juliane’s Amazing Struggle

We have been learning about some incredible feats of human survival over the past few weeks. One of the most amazing stories has to be that of Juliane Koepcke, who was the only survivor in a terrible plane crash over the Peruvian jungle in 1971. The details of her struggle to prevail in such harsh conditions are beyond belief.

  1. Dear 3/4R and Mrs Rogers,

We have just finished reading about Juliane’s amazing story of survival. Wow!
We especially liked reading the text on this site about it:

We were wondering how did she fall that far and not die. Do you know how she landed?

    1. That’s a great question! Juliane talks about 3 reasons for her surviving the fall:
      1. Due to the fact that she was still strapped into her seat, which was at one end of a row of three seats, she spiraled down to the earth below.
      2. Because there was a thunderstorm at the time, this caused a strong updraft of air which slowed her down.
      3. The area of the jungle in which she fell was particularly thick with trees and vines, which broke her fall.
      Amazing, eh?
Thanks for the link to the article you read – we’ll be sure to take a look.
